Let’s talk a little inspiration, okay?

My name is Lissa Matthews and I write erotic romance, and inspiration comes to me from various places.

Music is one. All kinds of music, too. Rock is a favorite simply because there are so many sexy songs. I like upbeat and suggestive. For instance, take Simple Need. It and the two books following it, Carnal Ecstasy and To Be Titled (I know what I call it, but, the publisher may not agree to the name) are all inspired by Nickelback’s S.E.X. from their Dark Horse cd. It’s direct, it’s to the point, it’s all about the sex and that is just yummy inspiration.

Or, you could take my upcoming Samhain release, Sweet Caroline. Who has never hear Neil Diamond sing Sweet Caroline? And if you haven’t heard him (where the hell have you been?), what about the guy from Glee? That’s where I got the idea, listening to his young voice, watching his facial expressions. The image of a delicious hard bodied never set foot in the gym but works outside with his hands falling all over himself for a lovely, naughty, slightly older woman popped in my mind and just wouldn’t let go.

I have a story started that takes me back through my classical roots, pulling pieces from my memory of a Spanish French Horn player named Adam that I had such a thing for. I remember his voice, his smile, his hands, his dark eyes as he played so effortlessly… Yeah, there’s a lot of inspiration there.

Another inspiration for me is food. I am a foodie. I am not ashamed of it. Due to some personal changes in our household, I have had to become a reformed foodie somewhat. I am learning, again, to cook with fresh, raw ingredients, cook and bake from scratch, eliminate most all processed foods. It’s a challenge, but it’s a fun one…tedious, but fun.

In most of my books, I have someone making some sort of food. Here’s the list:

Pink Buttercream Frosting, cake baker and making dark chocolate fudge cake with pink buttercream frosting.

Simple Need, homemade vanilla citrus waffles.

Sugar Rush, dark chocolate truffles with chilies

Sweet Caroline, cheesecake

The Swing, grilled cheese

Stick Shift, molasses cookies

Carnal Ecstasy, lattes

See, I am addicted to food. I am turning that addiction into something healthier, but, I am always going to be obsessed, addicted to, love being a foodie. And honestly, I see nothing wrong with that. Most times, I’d rather read through a food magazine or cookbook than almost anything else.

I have been cooking since I was 9 years old. I cooked dinner sometimes and I got into baking when I tried to make homemade chocolate chip cookies. The first time didn’t turn out so well, but, I learned quickly.

The summers I spent with my grandparents taught me a lot. I learned from my grandmother how to cook with love, how to can jams, how to bake cobblers, and to assemble one of the best ham sandwiches for lunch. I make them here in my own kitchen using the same brands of ingredients as she buys and they never taste the same.

So, my love of food came early in life and has never left me. Too bad a love of exercise didn’t come with it at the same time.

My final piece of inspiration that I will share are real men. I don’t look to Hollywood for character look-a-likes. I think it’s because I can’t get to know them and all I see is the surface of who they pretend to the world to be. That’s not inspiring, at least not to me. As I’ve said before, Vinter from Simple Need is a real person. A book I’m working on called Trouble in the Making is about an old friend of mine from high school that I’ve reconnected with named Johnny. Jack from Educating Rose is a real person, as is Aidn from Pink Buttercream Frosting. And as I mentioned earlier in this post, Adam.

I like using bits and pieces of their personalities, sometimes all of their personality that I know, most of the time their physical attributes. For instance, ALL those piercings and tattoos on Vinter, they were taken from the real deal!

I don’t like fake characters or perfect characters. I want someone real that I can look at, talk to, get to know and in knowing these men, I have been able to create them in words. I love that. And as far as I know, they have loved all that I’ve done with them in my books. (Boy, that could be taken so not the way I meant it!)

Wow! I talked a lot!

I want to thank Lisa for having me here to guest blog. I have brought along book covers and blurbs from a few of my books. Excerpts can be found on my website.

And look for my new release Sweet Caroline from Samhain Publishing, Tuesday, April 27th!

Excerpt from Sweet Caroline:

Sweet Caroline by Lissa Matthews

The second time around is even sweeter…with cherries on top.

Blue Jeans and Hard Hats, Book 1

Buck doesn’t do personal projects. Until he runs into a woman wandering the aisles of the local home-improvement store, looking lost and confused. Just the way this fantasy looks at him nearly buckles his knees. In a hot second, the successful owner of a contracting company becomes a simple handyman, ready and willing to get as personal as the lady will allow.

Since her less-than-golden marriage to the local golden boy ended, Caroline’s declaration of independence includes her own business, road trips…and nipple piercings. Now it’s time to cut the last tie to her old life, but the house needs some work before she can unload it and move to her dream cabin in the mountains. Hard as it is to admit, she needs a little help.

Over the next few months, he shows her his toys, like hammers and drills, and she shows him hers—like floggers and paddles. And their attraction is the tinder that could send Caroline’s plans for an independent life up in flames…

Warning: In this book, there are sightings of glass dildos, leather belt bindings, nipple rings, wicked clamps, cherry cheesecake and a hot, yummy handyman-type guy who’s really good with his hands…
