Charlaine Harris, Sookie Stackhouse and True Blood

May 2, 2010

I’ve always been partial to vampires.

The only drawback to being supernatural with an almost indefinite lifespan is figuring out how to make a living for that long.
Seriously…
I’ve often wondered how Anne Rice’s vampires were always so wealthy. In fact, nearly every literary and film vamp is loaded. Nobody ever answered my burning question – until Charlaine Harris.

I checked out the first episode of the first season of True Blood on HBO a couple weeks ago. Comcast had the whole season On Demand so I thought “What the heck?”
The first episode hooked me. I watched the entire first season within 24 hours. I love it!

Now I’m waiting for Netflix to send me Season 2 before Season 3 starts this summer.
When I discovered True Blood was based on a series by Charlaine Harris, I hit the library. I devoured the first two books only to discover there were two holds already requested on book #3.
I couldn’t wait.
I went to Barnes & Noble online and bought the ebook.
Then my library didn’t have book #4.
Back to Barnes & Noble online.
I’ve finished the fourth book and need MORE!
Now I have holds requested on books 5-7.

It is safe to say that Charlaine Harris has been keeping me up at night.  I aspire to be the kind of writer that can keep readers glued to my words like that.  It borders on supernatural power.

So I’ve read up to book #4 and have decided that Bill Compton is a douche.

Sam, though adorable and always appearing at the right place and time is too much of a puppy dog.

Alcide Herveaux is certainly not lacking in animal magnetism but the way he got suckered by his ex is a real turn off.

Now this were-panther guy seems like an honest, stand-up fellow with very little personal baggage.  He might be good for Sookie but…

Eric Northman has animal magnetism in spades, he’s loaded AND he sends Sookie considerate gifts like flowers when she was in the hospital, a work crew to redo her driveway and a new winter coat to replace the one that got guts all over it.  Let’s not forget the way he calls her “Lover”.

I don’t know how the series ends but I think Eric would be my choice if I had to choose one of Sookie’s men at this point.

If you haven’t yet read the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris do it now.  http://www.charlaineharris.com

If you haven’t seen True Blood yet, clear a whole day, call your cable company and order HBO.  Then watch the whole first season On Demand.  If you like anything paranormal, you’ll love this.

I’ve often wondered those same questions about the “rich” vamps. Must be all that time to steal or scheme or something. I’m sure they all start out small like stealing the wallet contents of their victims. Who knows, do vamps invest in the stock market? Dollar cost averaging would really work in their favor, don’t you think? Time is on their side after all. I love Ann Rice way better than the True Blood series but devour all vamp lit to keep up with what’s out there and to see if anyone’s thought of my vampire series story yet. Not yet, I guess I better get writing.

Charlaine Harris does a good job of explaining how vampires get rich. It is basically due to smart hunting and having all that time to learn and properly invest.
And I guess you’d better start writing.

Not to worry, I don’t think the Sooky stories are ever going to end … although I confess I thought that about Ann Rice’s vampires too and I was wrong.

She definitely has a talent for keeping you coming back. I’ve read them all and can’t wait for the next one.
