Billions – TV #Review @Showtime
It’s a Showtime free weekend on Hulu so I’m exploring the two series that piqued my curiosity, Shameless and Billions. I’m already a fan of Ray Donovan so Showtime pretty much owns me as soon as the new season starts. These two shows are just value-added as far as I’m concerned. About Billions:
Emmy® and Golden Globe® winners Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis star in a complex drama about power politics in the world of New York high finance. Shrewd, savvy U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti) and the brilliant, ambitious hedge fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Lewis) are on an explosive collision course, with each using all of his considerable smarts, power and influence to outmaneuver the other. The stakes are in the billions in this timely, provocative series.
The pilot episode can be wrapped up in one word – COMPELLING!
Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti are both epic actors. But the story…oh, the story!
You can have fabulous actors and still get a dung heap of a project. Just look at The Manuments Men. Incredible actors, but you can still hear them sucking over the snoring of the audience.
Well, that isn’t Billions!
Brian Koppelman, David Levien, Andrew Ross Sorkin and Willie Reale are bringing all A-Game with the writing. You know you’re hooked when you find yourself trying to identify the good guy and bad guy but can’t determine which is which. I especially loved the family moments, like when Axelrod was having dinner with his family in the kitchen and using some excellent teaching opportunities. Rhodes’ special moments with his father were particularly telling too. The characters have great depth and the story is all the more compelling because of them. I love this show and I’ll be queueing it up on my favorites every week!
I’m hooked. Take me!
